Biological regulation of subsoil C-cycling under field conditions

 

The main objective of this sub-project is to provide the analytical basis needed to improve the parametrization of microbial processes in biogeochemical models. In the first phase of the project, we focused on the effects of changing habitat conditions (e.g. substrate availability, temperature and moisture regimes) within the soil profile on carbon incorporation into different groups of soil microorganisms. During the second phase, we will follow the release of carbon from specific groups of soil microorganisms. We will measure turnover times of bacteria and fungi in the field as well as the transport of microbial-derived carbon within the profile. Since the results of the first phase underlined the importance of habitat conditions for fungal life within the soil profile, we will characterize the phylogeny of soil fungi and sort single taxa according to their functional traits.
