Root exudation, and water and nutrient uptake by European beech

This subproject investigates the distribution and abundance of fine (<2mm diameter) and coarse roots (>2mm) in subsoils up to 240 cm in depth in a mature European beech stand, the quantification of C turnover of beech fine roots, the measurement of the decomposition of dead fine roots in different soils and the quantification of root exudation and the nitrogen-uptake potential to quantify the C flux to the subsoil pool, to estimate the root exudation in the subsoil and to assess the uptake activity of fine roots in the subsoil compared to the topsoil activity. The results will be compared to four additional beech stands under influence of contrasting soil properties on different geological substrates.
