Tracing young and old carbon in subsoils

The main objective of this subproject is to trace origins of soil organic compounds and pathways of their transformations in subsoils using 14CO2 and 13CO2 analysis. Therefore various C pools will be fractionated by using stable and radioactive isotopes to get different functional pools. By using 13C labelled litter it is possible to understand the impact of environmental factors like temperature and the amount of oxygen on the amount and source of CO2 fluxes and the total rate of soil organic matter decomposition.
